Mt. Zion Baptist Church was established around the year 1893. The name of the church at that time was the “Negro Baptist Church”. It was located near the old railroad station in Clarkesville. Years later, a second building was erected. Mt. Zion served the people of the community for many years under the leadership of many Pastors, including Rev. Garrison, Rev. W.B. Hawks and Rev. Moon.
In 1964 Mt. Zion was sold and land was purchased from Mrs. Georgia Small to build our church. The church was constructed by Rev. Joe Banks. He worked hard to complete the church until his untimely death in 1968. While our church was being constructed, Days Chapel opened their doors to us to worship on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.
It was on April 5, 2009 that God Blessed us with, Pastor Benjamin L. Hawks as our Shepherd. Under the leadership of Pastor Hawks several improvements were made a Young Adult Sunday School Class, Evangelism Team, Gift Assessment Class, a New Covert Class was reinstated, as well as the Church Mortgage being paid off, a Young Adult Choir was started, A/C Unit Purchased and Paid off, New Exit Signs and Fire Extinguishers were purchased, an Evangelist Licensed, a New Roof was installed, Deacon Ordination and is currently undergoing a Sanctuary remodel.
